I looked round at his office, and saw him through the partition glass. He was smiling and winked at me.

He’d sought to bring down the career of a promising young lawyer, he’d treated me like dirt and now he was trying to control me once again. Boy, was I going to make him pay for it tonight. I was going to hurt him.

CHAPTER 5

During my previous relationship with Ryan, he’d often bring food round to my home at weekends and I’d happily give him the run of my kitchen to cook it. He was a better cook than me, and I didn’t hesitate to admit it. It seemed as if he was attempting to resurrect this practice when he came again.

As soon as I got home, I dressed myself up like a high class hooker, with a low-cut dress he hadn’t seen, stockings, high heels... and the strap-on dildo, prodding proudly forward under my skirt. I was getting myself on edge in anticipation.

Fifteen minutes before Ryan was due to arrive, the phone rang. Oh my God, I hope he’s not ringing to cancel, I thought.

It was Lionel. “I’m leaving the London office. After what happened last night, I couldn’t stay. I’d lose my nerve. The senior partner tried to persuade me to stay but I told him that, if the firm couldn’t fix me up with a position somewhere at one of the U.S. offices, I’d leave the firm. They weren’t having that, and I’m flying back tomorrow. So it’s goodbye, Carolann. I know you tried hard with me, and I’ll always remember you.”

“Does it really have to be like this?”

“Yeah. I guess so. By the way, I left a little parting gift for our friend Ryan. I sowed the seeds of doubt into his little girlfriend’s mind. Through his interfering, I’ve lost you – as well as my London job – so I’ve persuaded his girl to walk out on him. Crazy, eh?”

“Lionel, I –”

“So long, Carolanne. I do hope we meet again one day. Come over to the States – you’ll love it.” He hung up, just as my doorbell sounded.

When I opened the door, he walked straight past me and headed for the kitchen. No greeting, and no kiss. I noticed that he carried a plastic bag containing our dinner.

“I didn’t have time to get anything to cook, so I called in at the fish and chip shop on the way here. It’s ready to serve.”

He doled out our dinner on to the plates while I opened a bottle of cheap white wine, poured some into two glasses, and we sat opposite each other at the dining table.

He held up his glass and smiled at me. “New beginnings?”

“That’s a strange toast to propose,” I said. “I thought this was just a temporary arrangement – a kind of payment to preserve poor Lionel’s integrity in the firm.”

“I’d hoped it might be a little more than that. We need to talk.”

“All right, then. New beginnings.” I chinked my glass against his.
